Coal and energy security: between transition and stability
9 September 2026 • 12:00
-13:30
Thematic scope
Coal remains one of the pillars of energy security for many countries, despite growing climate, regulatory and cost pressure. Amid geopolitical instability and rising demand for energy, the debate on the future of the sector continues – from phase-out scenarios to the development of low-emission technologies and the maintenance of stable capacity in the power system.
The costs of EU climate policy, including the EU ETS, are having an increasing impact on the sector’s competitiveness, significantly affecting energy prices, the profitability of coal assets and the pace of the energy transition in Poland and Europe.
Main themes:
- The role of coal in energy systems
- The EU ETS and the impact of climate policy on the energy sector
- Security of energy supply
- CCS/CCUS technologies
- Transformation of the sector and the energy market
Key questions:
- What role will coal play in the 2030–2040 perspective?
- Does the EU ETS need to be reformed from the perspective of energy security and industrial competitiveness?
- How can climate policy be reconciled with security of energy supply?
- Is a technological transformation of the coal sector possible?
