Critical raw materials and rare metals: who controls the future of the transition?

9 September 2026 • 12:00 -13:30

Thematic scope

The energy transition, electromobility and the digitalisation of the economy depend on a limited group of critical raw materials. Their availability, processing and control over supply chains are becoming one of the main arenas of global economic and political rivalry.

The growing concentration of extraction and processing in selected regions of the world raises questions about security of supply, economic resilience and the future of Europe’s raw materials policy. Poland’s role is also becoming increasingly prominent in the debate – both as a country with raw material and industrial potential and as an important participant in European value chains for the energy transition and the battery industry.

Main themes:

  • REEs, lithium, nickel and cobalt – global demand and supply
  • China’s dominance and the EU/US response
  • The potential of Poland and the CEE region in critical raw materials
  • European and Polish extraction and processing projects
  • Diversification and security of supply

Key questions:

  • Do Europe and Poland have genuine extraction and processing potential?
  • What role can Poland play in the European critical minerals value chain?
  • How can access to key raw materials for industry and energy be secured?
  • Will raw material conflicts become the new normal?
